This calculator uses the Net Water Volume principle. Most hobbyists dose based on the manufacturer's tank size (e.g., 20 gallons), but after adding 2 inches of substrate and 15 lbs of rock, the actual water volume might only be 16 gallons. Dosing for 20 gallons in a 16-gallon environment leads to a 25% overdose.
