Aquarium product storage: expiry, heat, freezing and shaking
By Richard James · Manufacturer sources reviewed 28 October 2026
Follow the exact product’s storage and handling instructions. Manufacture date, opening date, expiry and temperature history answer different questions. Neither a generic shelf life nor a normal-looking liquid establishes that an unidentified bottle is suitable to use.

Selected manufacturer examples
| Exact product | Published guidance | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Seachem Prime | The manufacturer FAQ says it lasts indefinitely when properly stored. | That condition does not validate an unknown or contaminated bottle. |
| Seachem Stability | Six-year shelf life from manufacture; shake before use. | Do not count six years from the date you bought or opened it. |
| Seachem Flourish | Refrigeration is recommended three months after opening. | This is product-specific, not a refrigeration rule for all fertilisers. |
| Hikari Ich-X | Do not freeze. The maker says not to use product with the stated green-crystal or clumping signs of freezing. | Do not assume warming and shaking makes a frozen bottle usable. |
| eSHa GASTROPEX | Keep bottle and leaflet in the original packaging. | Retain the identity and instructions, not just the liquid. |

Build a useful bottle record
- Full product name, formulation and pack size.
- Batch and manufacture/expiry details exactly as marked.
- Purchase and opening dates, kept separate from manufacture.
- Normal storage location and any known freezing, heat or contamination event.
- Applicable instructions and clarification received from the maker.
A small dated note beside the bottle can avoid guessing how long it has been open. Keep labels and closures legible and follow any child/pet and contact precautions on the pack.
Do not use appearance as a universal test
Flourish’s FAQ says its colour can vary between batches; Ich-X gives a specific warning about freezing signs. The two examples illustrate why one visual rule cannot be used for all products.
No generic smell, fizz, sediment or colour test is provided here. If the history or condition is uncertain, send the maker the exact bottle details and photographs rather than experimenting in an occupied aquarium.
Shaking and storage are separate instructions
If the maker specifies shaking, follow that instruction before measuring. Shaking is not a way to establish remaining potency or reverse an excluded storage condition. Nor does a mixing instruction authorise creating a diluted stock for later use.
Read the stored-mixture guide before decanting or combining fertilisers. A shelf-life statement for an original bottle does not automatically apply to a homemade mixture.
Common questions
Should every bacteria product go in the fridge?
No universal rule is established here. Check that exact formulation’s temperature and shelf-life instructions.
Can I add more of an old product to compensate?
This guide supplies no potency-based correction. An uncertain bottle is not a reason to invent a higher dose.
What if the bottle and website disagree?
Record and resolve the discrepancy with the maker before using a calculation.
