How to calibrate an aquarium dosing pump and check its output

By Richard James · Manufacturer sources reviewed 28 October 2026

Use the exact pump model’s calibration procedure, then collect and check its output as instructed. A correct aquarium dose does not prove that a pump delivers that volume. Calibration checks delivery; it does not choose the aquarium’s nutrient requirement.

Keep these three jobs separate

JobPurposeWhat it does not establish
PrimingFill the relevant tubing according to the manual. That a measured aquarium dose has been delivered.
CalibrationSet the device’s delivery reference using its procedure.A treatment or fertiliser prescription.
VerificationCollect a requested output and compare the reading.Accuracy at every other setting or liquid.

Before collecting any liquid

  1. Identify the model, head, software/manual version and supplement.
  2. Follow the installation instructions for tubing, placement and prevention of unintended flow.
  3. Ensure calibration or priming liquid is collected appropriately, rather than unintentionally entering the aquarium.
  4. Use the specified measuring equipment and method.
  5. Keep the automatic schedule from adding an unrecorded extra amount while you follow the manual’s setup process.

Do not transfer a run-time or correction formula from another model. Some devices ask for a measured volume; others use different calibration inputs.

Manufacturer example: Red Sea ReefDose

The linked ReefDose manual calls for calibration of each head for its supplement, priming to the outlet tip, and recalibration after replacing the internal dosing tube. Its procedure uses the supplied measuring cylinder.

For that manual’s procedure, the app follows the calibration reading with a 4 mL confirmation; the stated confirmation range is 3.95–4.05 mL. Follow the app if it calls for another calibration. These values are specific to that model and manual, not an acceptance range for every dosing pump or measuring device.

The manual also specifies reading the centre/lower part of the liquid surface and keeping the cylinder clean and dry before each measurement. Check the current instructions for your own equipment.

Why repeated checks can be informative

Consider three hypothetical collections requested at 4 mL: 3.8, 4.0 and 4.2 mL. Their mean is 4.0 mL, yet the individual results differ by −5%, 0% and +5%. A matching average therefore does not prove consistent delivery. These invented readings are not a pump test or acceptable tolerance.

Record the individual values, reading method and conditions. Use the manufacturer’s verification and troubleshooting procedure rather than inventing a correction from the average.

Keep a calibration record

The worksheet separates requested volume, collected volume, priming, head/tube changes and the next action. Record the measuring device and exact liquid. Recheck when the manual requires it, particularly after relevant component or supplement changes.

Common questions

Can I calibrate with water for every fertiliser?

Not as a universal rule. ReefDose specifies calibration for the supplement; follow your exact model’s procedure.

Can I automate any medicine once the pump is calibrated?

Calibration does not establish medicine suitability, repeat timing or permission for unattended dosing. This guide concerns delivery checks, not a medicine automation protocol.

Does DoseMyTank change pump settings?

No. The calculators scale supported product directions; they do not control or calibrate a pump.
