The eSHa Quarantine Protocol: Proactive Treatment for New Arrivals
The most dangerous day for your aquarium is the day you add new fish. Even the healthiest-looking fish from a reputable store can carry dormant parasites, bacteria, or fungus that can wipe out an established colony. To mitigate this risk, many advanced hobbyists use a "proactive" quarantine protocol.
Using the **eSHa Cocktail** approach, you can clear new fish of the most common pathogens before they ever touch your display tank.
Why Proactive Treatment?
Traditional quarantine involves watching fish for 4 weeks and only treating if they show symptoms. However, many parasites (like flukes or internal worms) don't show obvious symptoms until the fish is severely weakened. Proactive treatment "cleanses" the fish immediately, significantly reducing the quarantine time needed.
The 4-Day eSHa Quarantine Protocol
This protocol uses eSHa 2000, Exit, and gdex simultaneously to cover 95% of common aquarium diseases.
- Day 0: Acclimate fish to the quarantine tank. Allow them to settle and feed once.
- Day 1: Dose full amount of eSHa 2000, eSHa Exit, and eSHa gdex.
- Day 2: Dose 2000 & Exit (Standard Day 2 maintenance dose).
- Day 3: Dose 2000 & Exit (Standard Day 3 maintenance dose).
- Day 4: Observe. If fish are active and eating, perform a 50% water change and add carbon.
Why gdex on Day 1?
eSHa gdex is specialized for flukes and tapeworms. These are the most common "hidden" killers. By adding it to the Day 1 mix, you ensure that any internal or gill parasites are hit alongside the external bacteria and fungi addressed by 2000 and Exit.
Important Safety Tips
- Keep it Bare: A quarantine tank should have no substrate. This makes it easier to spot parasite drop-offs and keeps the water cleaner during medication.
- Extra Air: As with all treatments, maximize surface agitation.
- Simple Filtration: Use a sponge filter that has been seeded in your main tank. This provides instant bio-filtration that can handle the nitrogen load during treatment.
The Post-Treatment Observation Period
Why do we wait another 7 days after the 4-day protocol? It is to account for the incubation period of more exotic diseases that the cocktail might have suppressed but not totally cured. If a fish is still carrying a heavy internal parasite load, you will notice its energy levels or appetite drop during this "clean" week.
Quarantine Tip: Avoid heavy feeding during quarantine. A lean fish is easier to observe, and you want to keep the nitrogen load in your sponge filter as low as possible while the meds are active.
When to Move to the Display Tank?
After the 4-day protocol, we recommend observing the fish for another 7 days. If they remain vibrant, are eating well, and show no signs of stress, they are ready to be moved to their permanent home. Before moving them, ensure you have removed all traces of medication from the quarantine water if you plan to reuse the tank soon.
