Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2): The Invisible "Liquid Scraper" and Emergency Lifeline
I once walked into my fish room to find my 100-gallon show tank looking like it had grown a thick, black beard. Black Beard Algae (BBA) had covered every leaf of my slow-growing Anubias and every inch of the driftwood. I was ready to tear the whole thing down and start over. Then, I remembered the advice of a master aquascaper: "Stop trying to out-source the work. Use a bottle of 3% peroxide and watch the physics explode the problem."
He was right. Within 24 hours, the black fur turned a ghostly white. Within 48 hours, it was pink. Within 72 hours, it was gone—eaten by the shrimp who suddenly found the "cooked" algae delicious. But Hydrogen Peroxide isn't just an algae killer; it's a chemical multitool that can save your fish during a power outage or a disease outbreak. Here is how to use it without turning your tank into a chemical wasteland.
The Science: How Peroxide Works
Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is essentially water with an extra oxygen atom attached. That extra atom is highly unstable. When it touches organic matter (like algae, bacteria, or parasites), it "oxidizes" them. Think of it like a controlled micro-explosion that rips apart the cell walls of pathogens.
The Best Part: Unlike copper-based meds or harsh antibiotics, Hydrogen Peroxide leaves no chemical residue. It breaks down into pure water (H2O) and pure oxygen (O2). However, keep in mind that as algae and bacteria die off, they create a temporary "organic load" that your filter must process.
The "Death List": Who Peroxide Hates
While H2O2 is safe for most fish, it is lethal to certain plants and sensitive invertebrates. Do NOT treat the whole tank if you have:
- Mosses: Java Moss, Christmas Moss, and Fissidens will melt into mush.
- Vallisneria: This plant is incredibly sensitive and will "disintegrate".
- Pellia/Riccia: Liverworts are basically algae-adjacent and will die instantly.
- Sensitive Shrimp: Crystal Red Shrimp or very small Neocaridina can struggle if the dose exceeds 1ml per 5 gallons.
Use Case 1: The Algae Sniper (Spot Dosing)
This is the most popular use for H2O2. You don't dump it in the tank; you "inject" it directly onto the problem area. This is the only way to kill BBA and Staghorn algae reliably.
- Turn off the Flow: Turn off your filter and all wavemakers. You want the water to be perfectly still.
- Fill the Syringe: Draw 3% Hydrogen Peroxide into a syringe (max 1ml per gallon for the total session).
- Squeeze Slowly: Squirt the peroxide directly onto the algae patches. It will stick to the algae and start fizzing.
- Wait 20 Minutes: Let the peroxide sit and react. After 20 minutes, turn your filters back on.
Use Case 2: Emergency Oxygen (The Lifeboat)
You wake up and the power is out. The temperature is dropping, but more importantly, your fish are gasping at the surface because the water has gone stagnant. Hydrogen Peroxide is an "Oxygen Bottle in a Liquid Form."
Because H2O2 releases pure oxygen as it decomposes, it can be a vital "last resort" measure to keep your fish alive during an outage. However, use caution: high doses can stress the gills of already struggling fish. Whenever possible, prioritize manual aeration (scooping and pouring water back in) or battery-powered air pumps.
Emergency Dose: Use 1ml of 3% H2O2 per 5 gallons of tank water. Pour it near the surface. Repeat every 12 hours if the power stays out. The chemical reaction provides an immediate, dissolved oxygen boost that buys you hours of time.
Use Case 3: Whole-Tank "Pathogen Flush"
If your tank is suffering from an unidentified fungal outbreak or a slime coat infection that isn't responding to salt, a whole-tank dose can act like a "reset button" for pathogens.
Level 1: Conservative Dose
Dose: 1ml per 5 Gallons (19L)
Best for tanks with shrimp, snails, or sensitive scaleless fish. This provides a gentle oxidation of water-borne bacteria and a light oxygen boost.
Level 2: Standard Dosing
Dose: 1ml per 2 Gallons (7.5L)
The "sweet spot" for killing Cyanobacteria (Blue-Green Algae) and treating mild external parasites. Most plants (except mosses) are fine with this once a day for 3 days.
Level 3: The "Resistant Algae" Dose
Dose: 1ml per 1 Gallon (3.8L)
Major Caution: This is the absolute upper limit. In "clean" tanks with low organic matter, this dose can damage your beneficial bacteria and burn fish gills. Most experts recommend starting at 0.5ml per gallon to protect your nitrogen cycle. Use Level 3 only if heavily infested and prepared to monitor ammonia closely.

- Always use 3%: H2O2 comes in various strengths (6%, 12%, 35% food grade). This guide—and most hobby advice—is based ONLY on the standard 3% solution. 35% will kill everything instantly if not diluted properly.
- Check Expiry: Peroxide loses its "extra" oxygen over time. If it doesn't "fizz" when you put a drop on a piece of algae, it has likely degraded into plain water.
- The Prime/Dechlorinator Conflict: Peroxide is an oxidizer; water conditioners like Seachem Prime are reducers. They neutralize each other on contact. Wait at least 2–4 hours after using a dechlorinator before adding peroxide to ensure both work effectively.
- The "Daytime" Rule: While some suggest night dosing, it is safer to dose during the day when plants are photosynthesizing. At night, plants consume oxygen; adding an oxidizer then can lead to a dangerous dip in dissolved oxygen levels for your fish.
