Liquid Carbon (Excel) Deep Dive: Is it a Fertilizer, an Algaecide, or Both?

Products like Seachem Excel, Easy-Life EasyCarbo, or API CO2 Booster are sold in almost every fish store on the planet. The labels promise "liquid carbon for plants," often implying it's an easy alternative to a complex pressurized CO2 system.

But ask a group of experienced aquascapers about these products, and you’ll get a mixture of high praise and vocal warnings. One guy will swear it saved his tank from Black Beard Algae (BBA), while another will tell you it melted his prize Val (Vallisneria) into a puddle of mush.

So, what exactly is this "magic clear liquid," and should you be pouring it into your tank every morning?

The "Fertilizer" Debate: Can Plants Actually Use It?

The marketing claim is that these products provide a bioavailable organic carbon source for plants. Science says: Technically, yes, but it’s not very efficient.

Plants are built on carbon. In a pressurized CO2 tank, they pull CO2 gas from the water and use photosynthesis to turn it into sugar. Liquid carbon products provide a carbon molecule that plants can absorb, but they have to spend more energy to process it compared to gaseous CO2.

In a low-tech tank with slow-growing plants like Anubias or Java Fern, liquid carbon can provide a noticeable boost. However, in a high-tech tank with demanding stems, liquid carbon is like trying to fuel a Ferrari with a AAA battery—it just isn't enough to sustain high-speed growth.

The Secret Identity: The Ultimate Algaecide

  1. Vallisneria (Val): This is the most famous victim. High doses of liquid carbon will cause Val to turn translucent and dissolve within days.
  2. Most Mosses: Java Moss and Christmas Moss can often handle standard doses, but "spot dosing" directly onto them can lead to browning.
  3. Pellia / Riccia: These more primitive "liverworts" are highly sensitive to Glutaraldehyde.
  4. Elodea / Egeria: These fast-growing weeds often struggle with liquid carbon dosing.

The "Spot Dosing" Technique: A Masterclass

If you have a localized BBA problem, don't just dump the dose into the water. Use the Spot Dosing method:

Within 24 to 48 hours, the BBA will turn bright pink or white—this means it's dead. Your shrimp and snails will then move in to feast on the decaying remains.

Safety Precautions: Accuracy is Everything

Because Glutaraldehyde is a disinfectant, it can be toxic at high doses. Overdosing liquid carbon won't just melt your plants; it can strip the protective slime coat off your fish or even crash your beneficial bacteria. This is another scenario where knowing your Actual Net Water Volume (not the box size) is critical. If your dose is calculated for 20 gallons but you only have 15 gallons of water, you are essentially "triple-strength" dosing your tank.

Pro Tip: Liquid carbon has a short shelf life once it hits the water—usually about 12 to 24 hours. This is why you must dose it daily at the same time to maintain effectiveness.
