If you walked into a supermarket or a generic department store looking for fish supplies, you'd almost certainly find Tetra AquaSafe. It is the world’s most recognizable water conditioner and has been for decades.

But when you start moving toward serious aquarium keeping—joining clubs, reading forums, or visiting high-end shops—you’ll hear a different name: Seachem Prime. Is Prime actually a "better" chemical, or is it just elitist branding?

Let's break down the real differences between the "big box" standard and the "pro" choice.

1. The Math: A Massive Gap in Value

The most shocking difference between these two products is how much you have to use to achieve the same result.

• Seachem Prime: 5ml treats 50 Gallons (200 Liters).
• Tetra AquaSafe: 5ml treats 10 Gallons (40 Liters).

If you have a 50-gallon aquarium, you need one capful of Prime or a staggering 25ml of AquaSafe. Prime is a "pure" chemical reducer. It doesn't add vitamins or "bio-extracts." Seachem believes that if your fish need vitamins, you should add them through high-quality food or specialized supplements rather than your water conditioner.

4. Availability and Convenience

Tetra wins on availability. You can buy AquaSafe at 10:00 PM at a 24-hour grocery store if you have an emergency. Because it is less concentrated, it is also "safer" for absolute beginners who might struggle with the tiny measurements required for Prime in a small 5-gallon tank.
