Root and water-column feeding: choose where the nutrients go

Quick answer
Root-zone and water-column supply are delivery routes, not two rigid plant types. Match the plant’s access to nutrients and the exact product rather than committing a tank to “100% liquid” or “100% roots.”
Choose the delivery route
| Situation | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Plants attached to rock/wood or floating | Can the chosen water-column supply meet their needs? |
| Large rooted plants in substrate | Is a root-zone supplement appropriate and correctly placed? |
| Liquid plus substrate products | What does each add, and are you duplicating a routine? |
What Tropica’s instructions support
Tropica describes nutrient uptake through both roots and leaves and offers liquid nutrients as well as root-zone capsules. Its capsule instructions specify placement near roots. That does not support saying every moss is entirely dependent on a particular liquid bottle or every rooted plant should avoid water-column nutrition.
Placement and schedule are product-specific
Follow the exact capsule, tab or liquid instructions. Do not dissolve a root product in water, leave it accessible to animals or change a liquid schedule solely because another keeper uses a different substrate. This page gives no generic root-tab spacing or replacement interval across brands.
Keep a useful planting record
Record species, planting position, substrate history, products and dated changes. Read the capsule’s own current directions if release-time statements differ between a general guide and a product page. Browse exact fertilisers · Check nutrient roles.
