eSHa 2000 for Fin Rot: When will my fish look normal again?
It’s a classic hobbyist worry. You notice your Betta’s beautiful tail looks like it’s been through a paper shredder, or your Goldfish has red, angry streaks on its fins. You reach for the eSHa 2000, you finish the 3-day course, and on Day 4... the fish still looks ragged. You start to think, "Did I do it wrong? Is it still rotten?"
Here’s the thing I’ve learned: Medication stops the rot, but it doesn't grow the fins. Understanding the difference between a "dead" infection and "scary" regrowth is the key to not over-medicating your fish into an early grave.
Is it Rot or just a Bully?
Before you dump the meds in, take a close look at the damage. If you see clean, sharp "U" shaped chunks missing, you probably have a fin-nipper in the tank (lookin' at you, Serpae Tetras). Bacterial Fin Rot is different—it looks dirty. You’ll see ragged, uneven edges, often with a white or gray "fuzz," or even bloody red tips. If that rot reaches the body of the fish (the peduncle), you're in a race against time.
The Reality Mirror: What to expect
Days 1-3: You aren't looking for growth. You are looking for stasis. If the jagged edges stop getting worse by Day 3, eSHa 2000 has done its job.
Days 4-7: This is the "Clear Window" phase. You’ll see a very fine, transparent edge where the fins were damaged. A lot of beginners see this white/clear line and think "Oh no, more rot!" It’s actually the opposite—that’s new tissue.
Weeks 2-4: Real regrowth. Depending on the fish's age and diet, the fins will slowly fill in. They might not always be as perfect or as straight as before, but the fish will be healthy.
Pro Tip: The "Clean Water" follow-up
eSHa 2000 kills the bacteria, but it doesn't fix the water that allowed the bacteria to thrive. Once Day 3 is over, I always do a 30% water change and a thorough gravel vac. You want the water to be "operating room clean" while those fins are regenerating to prevent a secondary infection from hitting the new, delicate tissue.
How to Tell If It’s Working
Look for these signs after the 3-day course of eSHa 2000:
- Stopping of "Melting": The fins should no longer look like they are dissolving day by day.
- Improved Energy: The fish should be more active and interested in food.
- Clear Growth Edges: Transparent "windows" at the end of the fins indicate healthy new tissue.
- Poor Water Quality: High ammonia or nitrites weaken the fish's slime coat.
- Stress/Bullying: Nipped fins often turn into infected fins.
- Sharp Decor: Plastic plants can tear delicate fins, providing an entry point for bacteria.
