Cichlid Ich-X Guide: Safe Dosing for Oscars, Angels & African Cichlids

Cichlids are tough, but Ich can still be a killer. Here is how to manage treatment in large Cichlid setups.

Cichlids are the heavyweights of the aquarium world. Whether you're keeping a massive Oscar, a graceful Angelfish, or a vibrant colony of African Cichlids, an Ich outbreak is a serious event. Because many Cichlids are highly territorial and intelligent, the stress of an infection can lead to "Hole in the Head" and other secondary issues if not handled quickly.

Ich-X is the preferred treatment for Cichlid keepers worldwide. It’s effective in a wide range of water parameters—from the soft, acidic water preferred by Discus to the hard, alkaline water of Lake Malawi. But when treating Cichlids, the challenge is often the sheer volume of water and the aggression of the fish.

The Large Tank Dilemma

Treating a 75 or 125-gallon Cichlid tank with Ich-X requires a lot of medication. The standard dose is 1 teaspoon (5mL) per 10 gallons. For a large tank, this might seem like you're pouring half a bottle in daily. Precision is vital here because "eyeballing" the dose on a large scale can lead to significant errors.

Strategy by Cichlid Type

Angelfish & Discus

These fish have thin, vertically compressed bodies and massive fins. Ich often shows up on their pectoral fins first. Because they are sensitive to chemical "burns," I recommend the Staggered Entry method: don't pour the medicine in all at once. Mix your daily dose in a pitcher of tank water and slowly pour it in over 15 minutes.

Oscars & Large S. American Cichlids

Oscars are messy eaters and produce a lot of waste. In an Oscar tank, the "organic load" is always high. For Ich-X to work effectively, you must be aggressive with water changes. Perform a 40% water change before every daily dose to keep the medication from being "used up" by organic waste before it hits the parasites.

African Cichlids

The high pH of African Cichlid tanks can sometimes affect the lifespan of medications. Fortunately, Ich-X is stable in alkaline water. However, the high aggression levels in these tanks mean sick fish are often picked on. If a fish is heavily infested, consider moving them to a hospital tank for quieter recovery.

Oxygen Depletion

Large Cichlids need massive amounts of oxygen. Ich-X (and any medication containing Formalin) will reduce dissolved oxygen levels. You must increase aeration. A single sponge filter is rarely enough for a large Oscar or a colony of Africans during treatment. Add multiple air stones.

Step-by-Step Cichlid Dosing Protocol

  1. The Prep: Remove carbon/Purigen. Perform a large water change (30-40%).
  2. The Dose: 5mL of Ich-X per 10 gallons. Use a syringe or measuring cup for accuracy.
  3. The Cycle: Repeat every 24 hours. Change 1/3 of the water before each new dose.
  4. The Finish: Continue for 3 full days after the very last spot is gone.

Note on "Hole in the Head" (HITH)

If your Cichlid has Ich and is also showing pitting around the head, they are severely stressed and their immune system is crashing. Focus on clearing the Ich first with Ich-X, but ensure you are providing high-quality vitamin-enriched food to help them fight off the HITH concurrently.

Conclusion

Cichlids are resilient, but Ich is a relentless predator. By using Ich-X consistently and maintaining high water quality through massive water changes, you can ensure your favorite cichlids pull through. Don't take shortcuts—finish the full course of treatment to prevent a relapse.
