Missed an aquarium medication dose? What to check before continuing
By Richard James · Manufacturer sources reviewed 28 October 2026
Check the exact medicine's instructions and your actual dosing history before continuing. This review did not establish a universal missed-dose recovery schedule. Do not assume you should double, restart or extend a course because a scheduled addition was missed.

First distinguish a missed dose from an uncertain one
“I know I missed Tuesday's addition” and “I cannot remember whether I added it” are different situations. Another addition could duplicate an uncertain dose. Record what is known, what is estimated and what cannot be confirmed.
If an automatic device is involved, check its delivery record and the device instructions too. A calendar reminder or a calculated number is not proof that liquid reached the aquarium.
Collect these details before asking for advice
| Detail | Example of a useful record |
|---|---|
| Exact bottle | Name, formulation and photograph of the supplied directions. |
| Actual history | Amounts and times confirmed as added; the uncertain or missed event. |
| Water and equipment | Current system volume, changes, chemical media and UV history. |
| Current observations | Water results, symptoms and any change since treatment began. |
| Other products | Conditioners and other additions, with dates and amounts. |
A worked timeline, not a recovery prescription
Suppose a hypothetical course lists additions on Days 1, 2 and 3. The keeper confirms Day 1, knows Day 2 was missed and notices on Day 3. The useful question is:
“I used this exact bottle in this water volume at this time on Day 1. Day 2 was missed. Here are the water changes, other products and current observations. Which instruction applies now, and should the remaining timing change?”
The dates organise the problem. They do not establish that the missed and scheduled amounts should be combined or that Day 3 should become a new Day 1.
Why other products' intervals are not a solution
- Hikari gives PraziPro a minimum repeat interval; that is not a catch-up instruction for a different medicine.
- Seachem requires testing before Cupramine redosing; a missed calendar event does not satisfy that requirement.
- eSHa EXIT describes specific extension circumstances; those are not a general rule for repairing a missed course.
These examples explain the need for product-specific clarification. The checked pages did not provide a missed-dose protocol that this site can safely generalise.
Continue with a clarified plan
Contact the manufacturer with the record above. If fish are deteriorating or the diagnosis is uncertain, seek appropriate fish-health support. Once the plan is clarified, record the next action and time explicitly; do not leave both the old and revised schedules active.
The calculators show standard amounts and supported schedules. They do not know which additions you actually made and cannot decide how to recover a disrupted course.
Common questions
Can I double the next dose?
This guide provides no permission to do that. Use the exact manufacturer's missed-dose advice or obtain clarification.
Can I simply add an extra day?
Not as a universal rule. An extension described for one product or circumstance cannot be transferred to another.
What if I changed water as well?
Include that in the history. Read the water-change guide; do not independently stack a catch-up amount and a replacement amount.
