Aquarium medication planner: doses, water changes and test records
By Richard James · Manufacturer sources reviewed 28 October 2026
Keep the manufacturer’s course beside a dated record of what actually happened. A dosing planner should distinguish a planned action from a confirmed addition. It should not create a treatment course or automatically fill a missed day.

Set up the record before the course
- Identity: exact product, formulation, label version and source checked.
- System: aquarium or treatment vessel, actual water amount, units and any volume estimate.
- Plan: the applicable manufacturer instructions or the clarified plan supplied to you.
- History: other products, previous additions and relevant water results.
A saved calculator URL is useful supporting information, but it is not evidence that an amount was added. Record who performed the action if more than one person looks after the aquarium.
One row per actual event
| Record | What belongs here | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Planned action | What the established course calls for. | “Check the specified test before the next addition.” |
| Actual action and time | What was confirmed as done, including units. | “Test performed at 18:20; result recorded separately.” |
| Water and equipment | Changes, replacement-water preparation, media and UV. | “Measured replacement volume recorded; equipment checklist updated.” |
| Observations | Test name, result, units and visible changes. | “Photo taken; same test method and units noted.” |
The examples show record structure. They do not prescribe a dose, test interval or treatment.
Leave no-dose actions visible
A course may contain important actions on days without medicine. Do not compress the course into a list of liquid quantities. Seachem’s Cupramine instructions require testing before redosing; Hikari’s Ich-X instructions include pre-addition water changes. The record should retain those conditions alongside the relevant amount.
Use the exact product calculator to inspect its supported course. Copy each action as well as its day label; do not merge several days into a single total.
If the plan changes
- Keep the old entry legible and mark what was missed or uncertain.
- Record the reason, source of advice and time of clarification.
- Write the next agreed action explicitly.
- Check that another keeper will not follow the superseded schedule.
See the missed-dose checklist and water-change guidance before improvising a course change.
Common questions
Does the planner choose the next dose?
No. It records a plan established from the product instructions and appropriate advice.
Does this site save my treatment history?
The blank printable sheet collects no entries online. Anything you write on a printout or save locally stays outside this website; sharing it is your choice.
Can I use one sheet for two medicines?
Use separate product/course records so the instructions stay identifiable. Having two records does not establish that the medicines are compatible.
Sources and review scope
- Seachem Cupramine directions — test conditions belong in the course record
- Hikari Ich-X directions — pre-addition actions belong in the record
