Dosing Prazipro: The Safe Way to Eliminate Internal Parasites in Community Tanks

Few things are as disheartening to an aquarist as watching a once-vibrant fish waste away. You see the signs: sunken bellies, white stringy poop, or fish that "flash" and rub against decor as if they have an itch they just can't scratch. These are the classic calling cards of internal parasites—specifically flukes, tapeworms, and turbellarians.

When these "invisible enemies" strike your community tank, you need a solution that is tough on parasites but gentle on your livestock and bio-filter. For many, that solution is Hikari Prazipro. Known as one of the safest medications in the hobby, Prazipro (active ingredient: Praziquantel) is the gold standard for deworming. But even with a "safe" med, the success of the treatment depends on a precise dosing strategy.

What Makes Prazipro Different?

Unlike copper-based medications or harsh antibiotics, Prazipro does not significantly stress the fish’s organs. It works by causing severe muscle spasms in the parasites, leading to paralysis and death. Because fish have a much more complex nervous system than a fluke, they are unaffected by the concentration used in our aquariums.

Crucially, Prazipro is also safe for plants and does not kill the beneficial bacteria in your substrate or filter. This makes it one of the few medications that is truly "community tank safe."

The Symptoms: When to Start Dosing

Don't just dose because a fish looked at you funny. Prazipro should be used when you observe:

• Skin or Gill Flukes: Fish breathing rapidly, keeping one gill shut, or "flashing" (darting and rubbing) against rocks.
• Tapeworms: Segments of worms visible near the vent, or extreme weight loss despite a healthy appetite.
• Internal Worms: Lethargy coupled with white, translucent, or stringy feces.

Prazipro Dosing: Step-by-Step for Success

Step 1: The "Prep" Water Change

Before you ever open the bottle, perform a 25% to 50% water change. This reduces the organic load in the tank, making the medication more effective. Clean your mechanical filter pads, but leave your bio-media alone.

Step 2: Remove Chemical Media

This is where many treatments fail. Prazipro is easily absorbed by Activated Carbon, Purigen, and skimmers (in saltwater). If you leave these running, your dose will be gone in hours. Turn off your UV sterilizers as well, as UV light can break down the Praziquantel molecule.

Step 3: Shake It Like You Mean It

Praziquantel is notoriously difficult to dissolve in water. Hikari uses a patented "solubilized" formula, but it can still settle in the bottle. Shake the bottle vigorously for at least 30 seconds before measuring your dose. Failure to shake correctly can lead to an ineffective "weak" dose or a concentrated "strong" dose at the bottom of the bottle.

Step 4: Precision Measurement

The standard dose is 5ml (1 teaspoon) per 20 gallons of water. However, guessing your volume based on your tank's box size is a mistake. Displacement from decor can easily reduce your water volume by 20%.

In a 55-gallon tank that actually only holds 45 gallons, using the "55-gallon dose" is significantly wasting medication. While Prazipro is safe, you still want to be as accurate as possible to ensure you are hitting the therapeutic range without waste.

The Course of Treatment

Prazipro usually requires only one dose to kill adult parasites. However, it does not kill the eggs. Depending on the temperature of your tank, those eggs will hatch in 3 to 7 days.

For a complete eradication, I always recommend a two-dose strategy:

1. Dose once (Day 1).
2. Wait 5 to 7 days.
3. Perform a 20% water change.
4. Dose a second time to catch the newly hatched larvae before they can mature and lay more eggs.

What About Invertebrates?

Prazipro is generally considered safe for most ornamental snails and shrimp. However, it will kill "pest" worms like Planaria and Hydra. If you have decorative "worms" (like feather dusters in a marine tank), Prazipro is lethal to them. In most freshwater shrimp tanks, Prazipro is a standard and safe dewormer.

Prazipro is one of those essential tools that every fishkeeper should have in their cabinet. It provides a simple, effective, and safe way to handle some of the most common ailments in the hobby. Just remember the Golden Rules: perform your prep water change, remove your carbon, shake the bottle well, and always calculate for your actual water volume.
