While they need trace amounts of copper to survive, the concentrations found in many fish medications (like those for Ich or Velvet) are lethal pesticides to them.
Before adding anything to a shrimp tank, you must check the label. If it contains Copper Sulfate or Cupric ions, it is a no-go. Even trace amounts of copper from old pipes or contaminated decorations can cause "mysterious" deaths in a shrimp colony.

However, most high-quality all-in-one fertilizers (like Easy Green or NilocG Thrive S) use chelated copper at such low concentrations that they are perfectly safe for invertebrates.
Specifically, look for the "S" version of fertilizers (like Thrive S), which are formulated with even lower levels of nitrogen and copper to suit the delicate balance of a shrimp setup. But even with a "safe" fertilizer, the key is the Concentration.

Fish are relatively tolerant of Nitrates, with many surviving in 40ppm+. In a shrimp tank, especially for Caridina species, you should aim to keep your Nitrates below 10ppm. High nitrates interfere with the molting process, leading to the dreaded "White Ring of Death" where a shrimp becomes trapped in its own old shell and dies.
Medicating Shrimp: The Safe List
If your shrimp tank develops a pest problem (like Planaria or Hydra) or your shrimp caught a fungal infection, you have to be surgical with your treatment.
- No Planaria / Genchem: These betel nut extract-based treatments are the gold standard for killing Planaria and Hydra without harming shrimp or snails.
- Prazipro: Generally safe for shrimp when used as directed to treat flukes or internal worms.
- Ich-X: Can be used in shrimp tanks with caution, but itâs always safer to treat the affected fish in a separate quarantine tank if possible.
The "Nano" Factor: Why Volume Math is Vital
Most dedicated shrimp tanks are smallâoften 5 to 10 gallons. In these small volumes, the margin for error is non-existent.
Let's do the math. If you have a "10-gallon" shrimp tank with 3 inches of substrate and a large piece of driftwood, you likely only have 7.5 gallons of actual water. If you dose a medication meant for 10 gallons, you are overdosing by 33%. For an organism as sensitive as a Crystal Red Shrimp, a 33% overdose is almost certainly fatal.
