Treating Guppies with Ich-X: The High-Tail Recovery Guide
If you're keeping guppies, you already know they're the colorful socialites of the aquarium world. But their high-energy lifestyle comes to a screeching halt when "White Spot Disease" (Ich) hits. Suddenly, your active swimmers are flashing against rocks and looking like they've been sprinkled with salt.
The good news? Guppies respond incredibly well to Ich-X. It's gentle enough for their metabolism but ruthless against the Ichthyophthirius multifiliis parasite. Here is exactly how to handle an Ich outbreak in your guppy tank.
Step 1: The Pre-Dose Clean Up
Don't just dump the meds in. Ich-X works best when the organic load in the water is low. Before your first dose, perform a 30% water change and vacuum as much of the gravel as possible. This physically removes thousands of Ich cysts before they can hatch.
Remove Your Carbon!
If you have activated carbon, charcoal, or Purigen in your filter, take it out. These materials are designed to "scrub" chemicals from the waterâincluding the medication you're trying to use. If you leave it in, your treatment will fail.
Step 2: Dosing Ich-X for Guppies
Standard dosing for Ich-X is 5mL (1 teaspoon) per 10 gallons. For most guppy keepers with standard 10 or 20-gallon tanks, this is a straightforward calculation. However, if you have a lot of rocks and plants, your actual water volume might be less than you think.

Ich-X is unique because it's designed for daily use. MostIch life cycles can't be broken with a single dose. Follow this routine until 3 days after the last spot disappears:
- Change 1/3 of the water.
- Dose the full amount of Ich-X.
- Observe your fish for 30 minutes.
Special Considerations for Guppies
Temperature & Oxygen
You might have heard that you should "crank the heat" for Ich. While 82°F (28°C) speeds up the parasite, it also lowers oxygen levels. Guppies are active and need high oxygen. If you raise the temperature, add an air stone. The bubbles provide the surface agitation needed to keep your guppies breathing easy while the meds do the work.
The "Blue Silicon" Concern
Ich-X contains Malachite Green. Yes, it might slightly stain your clear aquarium silicone or white decorations over time. However, it's a small price to pay for saving your guppy colony. If youâre worried about staining, move your fish to a "hospital tank" for treatment.
What about Guppy Fry?
If you have some newborn fry in the tank, don't worry. Ich-X is remarkably safe for baby fish. I have successfully treated tanks with day-old fry at full strength without any casualties. In fact, leaving them in the main tank is safer than moving them and risking further stress.
When is it over?
This is the most common mistake: stopping too soon. The Ich you see on the fish is only one stage of the life cycle. There are hundreds of "invisible" parasites in the water and substrate. Continue treating for at least 3 days after the very last white spot disappears. This is the only way to ensure the infection doesn't come back next week.
