Prazipro vs. Fritz ParaClean: The Internal Parasite Showdown

When your fish start flashing (scratching against rocks), losing weight despite eating, or acting lethargic with cloudy eyes, you are likely dealing with parasites. The choice between Hikari Prazipro and Fritz ParaClean is one of the most common dilemmas in aquarium healthcare.

While both contain the powerhouse anti-parasitic Praziquantel, they are strategically very different treatments. One is a pure, liquid solution focused on flukes and tapeworms, while the other is a broad-spectrum blend designed to tackle both parasites and the bacterial issues that often follow them.

1. The Ingredient Gap: Metronidazole

This is the defining difference. Hikari Prazipro is a pure Praziquantel treatment. It is the industry standard for eliminating flukes and tapeworms without adding anything else to the water.

Fritz ParaClean adds Metronidazole to the mix. Metronidazole is an antibiotic and anti-protozoal agent. It is famous for treating "Hole-in-the-Head" disease and "Malawi Bloat." By combining these two, ParaClean treats not just the large parasites (like flukes), but also the microscopic protozoa and bacterial blooms that often infect a fish once the parasite has weakened its immune system.

2. Solubility and Delivery

Prazipro is notorious for being "ready to go." Because it is a liquid, it distributes evenly throughout the water column immediately. This is vital for treating large tanks where powder might settle before it can be effectively absorbed.

ParaClean is a powder (often in pre-measured packets). While effective, it works better in smaller tanks or hospital setups where you can ensure the powder is fully dissolved. If you have an intense internal parasite issue (like tapeworms), some scapers prefer to soak fish food in a diluted ParaClean solution to deliver the Metronidazole directly to the fish's gut.

3. The "Hexamita" Factor

If you keep Discus, Flowerhorns, or large Cichlids, you are likely terrified of Hexamita. Prazipro will not touch Hexamita. Fritz ParaClean, specifically because of its Metronidazole content, is a front-line defense against it. If your fish has thinning from behind the head or stringy white feces, ParaClean is the superior choice over pure Prazi.

4. Safety and Invertebrate Risks

Both products are generally considered safe for plants and most invertebrates when used correctly. However, Prazipro has a long-standing reputation for being "shrimp safe" in almost all scenarios. ParaClean is also shrimp safe, but the addition of the antibiotic Metronidazole can sometimes stress delicate shrimp if the water lacks high oxygenation or if they are already weakened by another issue.

5. Identifying Success Indicators

• Reduced Flashing: Within 48 hours of the first dose, you should see a significant decrease in fish scratching themselves.
• Clearer Eyes: Parasites often cause cloudy eyes or "pop-eye." As the medication works, the swelling and cloudiness should recede.
• Appetite Return: Internal parasites steal nutrients. A cured fish will suddenly become a "beggar" for food again.

Summary: The Verdict

Choose Hikari Prazipro if: You are 100% sure you are dealing with Flukes or Tapeworms (external/visible worms), you have a large display tank, or you want the most "pure" and easily soluble Prazi on the market.

Choose Fritz ParaClean if: You aren't sure exactly which parasite you have, your fish has stringy white feces or "Hole-in-the-Head," or you want a broad-spectrum treatment that covers both parasites and internal bacterial protozoa.
