If you're new to fishkeeping, you've likely heard the term "Cycling your tank" about a thousand times. But what does it actually mean? At its core, cycling isn't about the water—it's about the bacteria. These microscopic powerhouses are the true lungs and kidneys of your aquarium. Without them, even the most expensive filter is just a fancy water-stirrer.

In the "old days," we had to wait 6-8 weeks for these bacteria to naturally colonize a tank from the environment. The biggest danger is false security. Just because you added "Quick Start" doesn't mean your tank is fully bulletproof. You must still test your water daily during the first two weeks of a new setup. If you see Ammonia or Nitrite spikes, more bacteria and a water change are your best friends.
Also, remember that UV sterilizers can sometimes hinder the initial establishment of a colony. If you're dosing a new tank with live bacteria, it's best to turn off your UV light for the first 48 hours to let them find a home in your filter.
You don't just dose once! High-quality bacteria supplements are great for "boosting" the tank after a major water change, after cleaning a very dirty filter, or especially after finishing a course of antibiotics which can accidentally kill your beneficial colony. A maintenance dose once a week keeps your bio-filter robust and ready for anything.
Bacteria need ammonia to survive. If you add bacteria to a tank with no fish and no added ammonia source, the bacteria will starve and die.
Live bacteria have a shelf life. Always check the expiration date, as dead bacteria will only add to the ammonia load of your tank.
